Australian artist, film maker, producer and writer George Gittoes was born and brought up in Sydney but has lived all over the world. His work expresses his social, political and humanitarian opposition to the effects of injustice and conflict. After working with Andy Warhol and the Black Panthers in New York, he founded the Yellow House in Sydney with Martin Sharp in 1970. Following his 1986 visit to Nicaragua, the focus of his work became international, working in regions of conflict from Rwanda and Bosnia to Afghanistan, where he set up a new Yellow House, multidisciplinary arts centre in Jalalabad in 2011.
Among many prizes, Gittoes has twice been awarded the Blake Prize for Religious Art and the Sydney Peace Prize in 2105.
He continues to exhibit his paintings, to bear witness to war and campaign for peace around the world. His most recent book is Blood Mystic.
